1851<$50 RE> Humbert Fifty Dollar, 880 Thous. VF30 PCGS. K-5, Low R.5. 1851 was the first year of operation of the U.S. Assay Office, which used the facilities of Moffat & Co. Early varieties of 1851 Fifty Dollar slugs bear the date on the edge and not the obverse, Kagin-5 introduces the date on the obverse and has a relatively low fineness of 0.880. Housed in a first generation holder, the present piece retains noticeable golden-brown luster. A few moderate edge knocks are expected of a circulated heavy octagonal gold coin. The left (facing) wing is detached from the rock, as made from a lapped die. Listed on page 296 of the 2005 Guide Book.
From The Thomas Wolfe Collection, Part One.
