<B>1851 $50 LE Humbert Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. 50 Rev.--Repaired--NCS. AU Details.</B></I> K-4, High R.5. The production of these early Humbert coins was a cumbersome and labor-intensive process. Numerous inversion/doubling errors are known on the eight edges of these hand-lettered coins, some of which appear in the present sale. This variety also had the 50 denomination hand-stamped on both obverse and reverse, and the fineness on the obverse. What a pity that the encapsulations do not allow for better viewing of the edges, the all-important "third side" of these fascinating issues! By later in the year, when the edge legend AUGUSTUS / HUMBERT / UNITED / STATES / ASSAYER / OF GOLD / 1851 was moved to the obverse rim and the denomination was punched into the die, the first steps were taken toward standardization and mass production.<BR> This piece boasts a pleasing level of detail, but the fields have been smoothed on each side, giving a somewhat garish prooflike appearance on the obverse. Despite the attempted "improvement," this is an attractive example of this historic issue.
