1851<$50 LE> Humbert Fifty Dollar, 887 Thous. 50 Rev. XF45 PCGS. K-4, High R.5. In 1851, the U.S. Assay Office began production using Moffat & Co. facilities, under the supervision of U.S. assayer Augustus Humbert. Only $50 slugs were coined in 1851. Varieties K-1 through K-4 bore the 1851 date on the edge, an unusual location. K-4 is noted for a small 50 at the "bullseye" of the engine turned reverse, a repetition of the denomination "50 D" stated beneath the eagle's rock. A bright and richly detailed representative of this transitional variety, mostly yellow-gold in color although plum hues outline obverse elements. Moderately abraded overall, a small rim ding is at 7:30 on the reverse. Listed on page 296 of the 2005 Guide Book.
From The Great Western Collection of Territorial Gold.
