1851<$50 LE> Humbert Fifty Dollar, 880 Thous. XF40 PCGS. K-2, R.5. The center of the reverse is worn smooth, which makes it difficult to distinguish between K-1 and K-2. The latter is assumed. A canary-gold example of one of the earliest varieties of Assay Office slugs. The 880 fineness and 50 dollar value are incuse, and presumably were carefully entered by hand on the working die. The D and C beneath the rock leave room for the denomination to be entered in terms of dollars and cents, however, only 50 dollar pieces are known from this era. The eagle's wings and the shield are bold. Moderate abrasions are distributed and are inevitable for a circulated slug. Listed on page 295 of the 2005 Guide Book. Population: 2 in 63, 2 finer (5/05).
From The Great Western Collection of Territorial Gold.
