1851 $5 MS61 NGC. A full strike and frosty yellow luster are accented by light pink toning. Although the mintage of 377,505 coins was substantial for half eagles in the middle 19th century, nearly all survivors grade just XF or AU. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth provide population data for every gold issue in their Gold Encyclopedia, summarizing the total population of NGC, PCGS, and ANACS certified pieces. For 1851, a total of 441 coins were certified with an average grade of 53.8. Understanding that higher grade coins are more likely to be certified, this data is quite revealing. Census: 26 in 61, 30 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
