1851<3CS> MS65 NGC. Light chestnut-gray toning drapes this shimmering and attractively preserved Gem. Not fully struck in the center of the shield, as usual for business strikes of the series, but the rest of the design is intricately delivered by the dies. The Three Cent Silver was a billon denomination of necessity, since silver coins were absent from circulation in the early 1850s. An influx of California-mined gold made the yellow metal less valuable relative to silver, which became hoarded.
