1851 $20 MS61 NGC.<p>Ex: Pittman. With just over two million pieces produced, the 1851 has the highest mintage figure of any Double Eagle struck until 1861. This is definitely a common date, although not as much so as often assumed. The 1851 is seldom seen with as good a strike as the 1850 but this issue is characterized by nice luster and good color. An estimated 70-80 Uncirculated examples are known with the great majority in the MS60-62 grade range. This attractive MS61 piece is above average, although not in the Condition Census for the date; to qualify as such an 1851 Double Eagle must grade MS63 or finer. This lustrous coin shows scarcely any abrasions; in fact, the only one worthy of mention is a thin, angling mark across Liberty's cheek. Sharply defined throughout, the surfaces are a rich green-gold color with a light overlay of reddish patina.Ex: Michael Higgy Collection; purchased by JJP 11/5/49 from Ralph E. Elser for $60.
