1851 $20 AU58 NGC. Gold was pouring into the Philadelp
1851<$20> AU58 NGC. Gold was pouring into the Philadelphia Mint from California, and as a result, this issue had an impressively high mintage of over 2 million coins. No previous gold issue of the United States, in any denomination, had a mintage as high as this figure (although in the same year, over 3 million gold dollars were also produced). Mint records indicate that 13 obverse dies and 33 reverse dies were produced for this coinage, and they were apparently all well made, for there are no notable varieties of this date that have been discovered. Breen did note that examples exist with either Heavy Numerals or Thin Numerals, but we are not aware of any collectors who place a premium on either one of these two variations. This near-Mint representative is an attractive double eagle with frosty and highly lustrous yellow-gold surfaces. The color ranges from light yellow to honey-gold with splashes of rose toning. A sharply struck example, the surfaces are relatively mark-free, although the usual small ticks are evident on each side.
From The Wyoming Collection.
