1851<1C> N-35, Low R.6. AU55 NGC. VF30 EAC. Grellman state a. The obverse has a lump on Liberty's neck near the throat. Fine lines down from the bottom of C in CENT are clearly visible on this example. This is a rare variety with a low Census. An XF40+ example (EAC grading) in the 2002 Brown sale was recorded as second finest known. Apparently an early die state as there is no evidence of the usually or always seen reverse rim breaks. Bob Grellman noted that sharp examples without any rim breaks are unknown. Fine die lines down through OF AM are clearly visible. It is almost a certainty that this cent was struck from the broken reverse die, but if not, it is the earliest die state known. Pleasing medium brown surfaces with a few small black corrosion spots on the reverse. The surfaces have trivial abrasions as expected for the grade.
Ex: George Ramont (6/17/1971).
