1850's Eastern Anatolian Caucus Tribal Kilim
Featured in this lot is this Eastern Anatolian Caucus tribal kilim circa 1850's. This is a beautiful rug from the the Eastern Anatolian Caucasian republics. The region of Eastern Anatolia borders the Caucasian republics that recently gained independence from the now-defunct Soviet Union; it also abuts Iran, formerly known as Persia. The region has experienced, in addition to Turkish, Kurdish, Azeri, Armenian, Russian and Iranian influence to a greater or lesser degree, some of which is evident in the designs and coloring of weavings made here. The rug shows a traditional design with a double border with motifs and symbols denoting fertility and marriage according to references found on similar kilim rugs. The medallions in the the center of the rug are similar to the scorpion or Akrep motifs used for protection from the animal with more marriage motifs along the inside portion of the rug. The condition of this this tribal kilim is fair to good with some wear to the edges and some wear to the coloration consistent with the age of the kilim but otherwise in fair to good overall condition. The measurements of this kilim are 69" x 41 1/2".
