1850-O$1> MS64 NGC. Just four different dates of Seated Liberty dollars were coined in New Orleans, and these were produced in 1846, 1850, 1859, and 1860. Of this brief series, the 1850-O issue had the lowest mintage with just 40,000 coins struck. In his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, Dave Bowers summed it up nicely: "If you want a Mint State 1850-O dollar for your collection, I suggest that you compromise and acquire an EF or AU instead, at least as an interim strategy, for it may be years, if ever, until you can buy a nice Mint State coin. Examples are few and far between." Indeed, a review of our archives shows just 19 previous Mint State appearances through the major auction houses in the past 15 years. Moreover, NGC and PCGS have certified fewer than 30 Uncirculated examples to date, some of which are undoubtedly resubmissions.
The near-Gem specimen presented here is a splendid example with satiny luster and very slightly mirrored fields. It is sharply struck on both sides with the sole exception of the eagle's neck, which lacks some definition. The surfaces on both sides have light gold toning, slightly deeper on the obverse periphery. Just a few tiny abrasions are scattered across the surfaces, and it is these miniscule marks that keep this from consideration as a Gem-quality example. This example is one of the finest 1850-O Seated dollars currently known to collectors; neither service has certified any in higher grades. Census: 4 in 64, 0 finer (3/06).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary.
