1850-O<S$1> MS63 PCGS. Duncan D. Lee, writing in the CDN Monthly Supplement Newsletter, (May 14, 2004), calls this date a "super rarity in Mint State" (emphasis his), ranking it eighth rarest of all Mint State 1840-73 Seated Liberty dollars and noting that "this date was not saved."
Copper-gold and bluish toning alternates with silver-gray areas on this lustrous, well struck, and original coin. No trace of the sometimes seen repunched O mintmark is present here. The obverse strike is better than often found on this date, which often comes weakly struck on the obverse. The star centrils are well detailed, although some minor highpoint detail is lacking on Liberty. Scattered contact marks limit the grade on this still delightful coin, notably a small dig on Liberty's chin and a light scratch in the right obverse field, as well as a couple of less noticeable marks buried in the folds of the cloak.
The reverse has toning that is a bit bolder, with striking weakness chiefly limited to the eagle's head and neck. A small mark is noted through the second A in AMERICA. Overall, these grade-limiting marks do not detract from the stunning originality of this appealing and difficult-to-obtain coin. A prime opportunity for the Seated Liberty or type coin enthusiast. The NGC Census Report states that four coins have been certified in 64, with none in 63 and six in 62, while PCGS records three in 63, with one finer (10/05).
