1850-O$1> MS61 NGC. Dark gunmetal-gray toning throughout with slightly lighter gray near the devices. This is a very rare date in any Mint State grade and apparently most of the original 40,000 coined entered circulation and served hard time. On the obverse we note a very sharp strike, with all the stars showing their radial lines and the skirt lines on Liberty particularly sharp. The reverse is similarly well struck, with strong definition on the eagle's claws, feathers and the shield. Die rust is seen in the fields on the obverse, with a raised lump in the field near the twelfth star, but more so on the reverse where numerous raised lumps are present, particularly below OF. We also note a few scrapes on the reverse, a couple behind the eagle's neck and another left of the mintmark, and these perhaps account for the grade. Census: 5 in 61, 9 finer (7/06).
