1850-O Liberty Seated Dollar NGC MS64
Two tiny marks on the knee. Satiny. The 1850-O is one of the favorite issues in the entire Seated Dollar series. Treasury department records show a mintage of 40,000 pieces, and domestic circulation throughout the territory in which these circulated undoubtedly took a toll on the coins. Examples are scarce in all grades, which shouldn't come as a surprise since everyone knows the '50-O is also a prime condition rarity, with even About Uncirculated coins being elusive in today's market. Add to this the fact that so many 1850-O Dollars have been dipped or scrubbed, and one can easily see the desirability of the originally toned near-Gem we present in this lot.

Light to medium color blankets both sides with lovely patination scattered around the peripheries. An overall sharp strike, particularly for an O-mint date, with minor weakness at a few stars and on the eagle's neck as well as the right on the reverse. Smooth-textured luster waffles from rim-to-rim when the coin is tipped under a light, there being only a few abrasions here and there in the fields and elsewhere. Currently unsurpassed in certified grade at either PCGS or NGC, this high-Condition Census example would serve as a centerpiece in even the finest Seated Dollar set.

All 1850-O Seated Dollars display scattered die rust pits (as made) in the reverse field and as described (in Bowers). The most prominent of these is evident below the O in OF. The combined grading census (from PCGS and NGC Population reports) is 5, with none finer. (#6938)
