1850-O G$1 MS64 PCGS. Ex: Bass. This issue was produced to the extent of only 14,000 pieces. With a mere 90-100 coins believed extant, it should come as no surprise to specialists that the 1850-O is the rarest New Orleans Mint Gold Dollar. According to our records, this is the finest example to appear at auction in at least ten years. In the 1992 book New Orleans Mint Gold Coins: 1838-1909, Doug Winter lists a similarly graded example in a private collection as the # 1 coin on his Condition Census. That coin sold at the 1974 ANA show, and it is distinct from the present example, which Harry Bass had acquired two years earlier. The strike on this coin is unimprovable for the issue with needle sharp, if not full definition over all elements of the design. Rich reddish-gold color envelops both sides and becomes more vivid the closer one moves to the rims. The luster is full with a softly frosted texture that is undisturbed by all but the tiniest abrasions. Solidly graded as a near-Gem, and one of the finest survivors of this important key date Gold Dollar.Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 41, where it realized $9,775. Bass purchased the coin from Walter Matloff on February 29, 1972.From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
