1850-O 50C MS64 PCGS. Open 5, Partial Drapery. Breen-4822. The first 1850-O Seated Half with partial drapery was discovered by Randy Wiley in 1979. This feature was caused by overzealous polishing of the obverse die, a practice that, per Wiley and Bugert, also explains why some '50-O Halves have an open 5 in the date as opposed to a closed 5. New Orleans Mint Half Dollar production in 1850 amounted to 2.4 million coins, and this issue is relatively common in circulated grades. Mint State survivors, on the other hand, are scarce to rare depending on their proximity to the Gem threshold. Well produced for a product of this branch mint, both sides are boldly detailed in all but a few isolated areas. A few clashmarks (as struck) are noted in the right obverse field, but neither side reveals any noteworthy abrasions. The richly toned surfaces are bathed in soft lilac-gray patina, over which streaks of olive color have gathered. Population: 10 in 64, only three are finer (7/02).
