<B>1850-O $20 XF45 NGC.</B></I> As the first year of issue for the type and the first branch mint double eagle to be struck, the 1850-O is immensely popular with collectors. Unfortunately, this issue is rarely found with aesthetically pleasing qualities. As Douglas Winter notes in his <I>Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint 1839-1909: </B></I> "Nearly every 1850-O double eagle has extensively abraded surfaces. These marks are deep and often very distracting." The current example is typical of the issue, with abraded surfaces throughout.
