1850-O $20 AU58 PCGS. The 1850-O is quite popular, both as the first year of issue of the Liberty Head double eagle series and as the first branch mint emission of the type. An examination of the population data at NGC and PCGS makes it evident that most examples of the 1850-O circulated, while quite a few pieces of the 1850 P-mint issue were clearly saved in Mint State. That survival is a function both of the larger mintage of the Philadelphia issue compared with that of New Orleans--more than 10 times as many, 1.17 million versus 141,000--and of the popularity of circulating gold and silver coins in the South and West. Another factor responsible is the total disregard and lack of awareness among collectors of the time regarding mintmarked pieces. Gold experts Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note that the numerous yearly offerings of the 1850-O issue are mostly well circulated, in the range of Very Fine to Extremely Fine at best. Even the Smithsonian Institution lacks an example as fine as the present specimen, having only an XF40 piece. Fully Uncirculated examples are very rare, making this near-Mint State specimen an excellent choice, and likely one of the finest readily obtainable. A search through our permanent auction archives shows that only six times previously have we offered so fine an example. This piece offers reflective orange-gold surfaces with the light field chatter characteristic of a short spate in circulation. There are no singularly mentionable abrasions on this strictly original and appealing coin. Among the five finest pieces at PCGS; NGC has certified four Mint State pieces (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
