<B>1850-O $20 AU55 NGC.</B></I> The 1850-O double eagle, with its mintage of 141,000 pieces, was once considered to be a common date. We now know that the issue is hard to find above XF45. Douglas Winter, in his <I>Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909,</B></I> asserts that the 1850-O " ... is very scarce in the lower About Uncirculated grades and most of the examples in this range are characterized by heavily abraded surfaces. High-end About Uncirculated pieces are truly rare and this issue is extremely rare in full Uncirculated."<BR> Peach-gold surfaces display a subtle green cast, and partially prooflike fields highlight the motifs when the AU55 coin in this lot is tilted beneath a light source. Sharp detail occurs on the design elements, except where slight wear shows on the highpoints of Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers. A relatively even distribution of minute contact marks is noted, but the surfaces are certainly not "heavily abraded" as most examples tend to be. Overall, a choice early twenty dollar piece.
