1850-O $20 AU53 NGC.<p>The 1850-O is a somewhat enigmatic issue. It is actually rather common in lower grades, although not nearly as available as the 1851-O or 1852-O. It is very scarce in properly graded AU50, rare in the higher About Uncirculated grades, and extremely rare in mint condition. It is typically seen with excessively abraded surfaces. Many are very weakly struck and original pieces are extremely hard to locate. The example that recently sold for $40,250 in the Sotheby's/Stack's Dallas Bank Collection was a lovely MS61-62 coin and is quite possibly the finest known. This piece shows the deep green-gold coloration and soft peripheral strike that is typically seen. However, it is not heavily abraded, as usually encountered. In fact, the only notable abrasions are a couple of marks behind Liberty's eye and another in the field in front of the chin.
