New Orleans gold offers the best of both worlds, combining ready accessibility with the exotic appeal of branch mint gold. The 1850-O goes a step further, adding the attraction of a mintmarked piece from the introductory year of a new type. Most survivors of the issue grade Choice XF or lower and are plagued by heavy abrasions. The present AU example preserves more than half of its original mint luster, but the surfaces are typical in terms of abrasions, with myriad moderate contact marks on each side.
