1850-O $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS. New Orleans Mint gold does no
1850-O<$2 1/2> MS62 PCGS. New Orleans Mint gold does not receive the attention and notoriety given to gold coins from the other Southern branch mints, with the exception of the double eagle series, with its several major rarities. This does not mean that New Orleans gold is common; indeed, there are quite a number of underrated issues such as the present 1850-O. Long considered to be virtually unknown in Mint State grades, recently a few pieces have been certified in grades as high as MS64, yet coins as fine as the present example remain few and far between. This piece, unusual for the date, appears to be fully struck on the obverse with the exception of the area immediately below Liberty's ear, and while areas of weakness are detected on the reverse in the usual areas of the shield, they do not detract from the appeal. Most notable, however, are the surfaces, which show abundant reflectivity virtually throughout the fields. To date, PCGS does not certify gold coins with the Prooflike designation; one would have to think that this piece would receive careful consideration should they ever decide to start. A beautiful coin combining condition rarity with unusual eye appeal. Population: 7 in 62, 3 finer (8/06).
