1850-D G$1 MS62 NGC. Winter 2-C, the only known dies. We are aware of only six 1850-D Gold Dollars that grade at or above the MS62 level, each of which qualifies for Condition Census standing: 1. Ex: Superior's sale of February 1999, lot 1660, where it realized $10,350. Certified MS62 by NGC at the time of that sale, and perhaps the same as one of the two following examples. 2. Ex: Long Beach Signature Sale (Heritage, 2/1999), lot 6093. Also graded MS62 by NGC. 3. The present example, prior pedigree unknown, but identifiable by an obverse abrasion in the field between the bun at the back of Liberty's hair and the star that is just past 3 o'clock. 4. Ex: 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale--The Chestatee Collection (Heritage, 8/1999), lot 7617, where it realized $14,375. A PCGS-certified MS62 representative. 5. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 40, where it realized $12,650. Bass purchased the coin from Fred Sweeney on September 18, 1972, and it was graded MS62 by PCGS at the time of the Bowers and Merena sale. 6. Ex: Jeff Isaac; Superior's sale of January-February 1993, lot 1257, where it realized $12,100. Certified MS63 by NGC, this is the # 1 on Doug Winter's 1997 Condition Census. As stated above, we do not know the prior pedigree of the present Ashland City representative. We do, however, know that this is among the better struck survivors of this second-year D-mint Gold Dollar. The denticles, while not complete, are free of the obvious lack of detail evident in select areas on the aforementioned Bass specimen, and the hair curls over Liberty's brow appear bolder than those on the similarly graded Chestatee example. Nevertheless, the overall quality of strike is expectantly poor for the issue with areas of softness here and there. Rich orange-gold color enhances the eye appeal, and moderately bright fields are also worthy of praise. Two swirls of pale haziness are noted on the reverse over and below the 8 in the date. In grades above XF, the 1850-D is the fifth rarest Dahlonega Mint Gold Dollar. About Uncirculated and Mint State survivors are more difficult to locate than those of such other issues from this era as the 1849-D, 1851-D, 1852-D, and 1853-D.From the Ashland City Collection.
