1850-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC.
1850-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 13-M. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). The only variety struck this year. The reverse is the same as seen on all Dahlonega quarter eagles produced from 1850 through the end of the denomination in 1859.RARITY INFORMATION: The 1850-D is the most available Dahlonega quarter eagle from the 1850s. There are 125-150 pieces known, including three to four dozen in AU. In Uncirculated, this date is extremely rare with as few as two or three known. A number of the pieces that have been designated as Mint State by NGC and PCGS are considered to be "sliders" by experts.STRIKE: This date is usually seen with a relatively poor strike, and the current example is quite a bit sharper than usual. On the obverse, there is some weakness above the ear while the reverse has a touch of weakness on the eagle's legs. Both sides show some minor weakness on the denticles, as typically seen on this issue.SURFACES: A number of small, shallow ticks can be seen in the obverse fields with light magnification. The reverse is cleaner and approaches the Choice level. It does not appear that this coin has ever been cleaned and it does not have any of the mint-made defects often found on 1850-D quarter eagles.LUSTER: A good deal of frosty luster can be seen on both sides but is slightly obscured by the depth of the toning on the obverse. Most 1850-D quarter eagles have poor luster.COLORATION: The obverse shows deep and possibly enhanced orange-gold color that is actually not unattractive. The reverse has a somewhat more original appearance. If the obverse were carefully lightened-up a bit, the overall appearance would probably improve greatly.EYE APPEAL: This is a well struck coin with acceptable luster and surfaces. The color is a bit "funky" in appearance and might improve if NCS were allowed to work its magic.COMPARABLES: In our January 2003 auction, we sold a PCGS MS60 example as lot 4689 and it realized $8,625. In our 1999 ANA Auction we sold another PCGS coin as lot 7650 and it brought $7,763. No third-party certified MS61 examples have sold for a number of years.PEDIGREE: Purchased from Robert L. Hughes. No prior pedigree information is available. This is the plate coin in the second edition of Winter's book and is listed in the current Condition Census as tied with a small number of other coins as the third finest known. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
