1850-C $5 MS61 NGC. Winter 14-F. This variety is most easily distinguished by the 1 in the date touching the bust of Liberty and an unfinished area in the reverse die between the eagle's left (facing) wing and the branch below. While the 1850-C is one of the more available Charlotte mint Half Eagles, surprisingly few Mint State examples are known. Winter believes only 7-8 pieces are extant today (we think the number is somewhat higher). At the MS61 level, this coin is just outside the Condition Census. Sharply struck throughout with a boldly defined mintmark (some are not), the green-gold surfaces show a few small, scattered abrasions in the fields but nothing that is particularly worrisome or bothersome. From the Ashland City Collection.
