1850-C<$5> AU53 PCGS. Variety 15-G. The 1 in the date is very close to the bust but not as much so as on the other variety of this year; the reverse was used in 1850 and 1851 and it shows a different mintmark position than Reverse F with the left edge of the C over the right serif the V in FIVE. The 1850-C is the 19th rarest Charlotte half eagle both in terms of overall rarity and in high grades. Of the estimated 160 to 170 pieces that are known, three dozen or so grade AU and another 7 or 8 are in Mint State. Many 1850-C half eagles are known with weak mintmarks and high grade specimens with boldly impressed mintmarks are rare and desirable.
The obverse is well detailed; the reverse has a faint but distinguishable mintmark that is positioned as on the reverse of 1849. Lightly patinated a reddish-gold color with some of the original luster intact. The dies are noticeably rotated approximately 60 degrees in a clockwise fashion.
From The Carolina Gold Collection.
