1850-C<$2 1/2> MS60 PCGS. Variety 12-G. An exquisite example of this desirable Southern gold issue. At least five sets of clash marks are prominent in the fields, and are characteristic of the comparatively primitive facilities at Charlotte. Nonetheless, the strike is sharp, aside from moderate softness on the shield lines. There is no indication of wear on the hair above the ear, unlike nearly all survivors of this difficult low mintage date. The luminous honey-gold surfaces are refreshingly unmarked for the MS60 level, although a couple of drops of lacquer are noted on the TY in LIBERTY, the hair over the ear, the cheekbone, and the field beneath star 8. This lacquer can be removed harmlessly upon proper conservation. Only 9,148 pieces were struck. Population: 1 in 60, 3 finer (8/06).
From The Della Collection.
