1850-C<$2 1/2> AU55 PCGS. Variety 12-G. Winter's reference notes that this issue "becomes very rare in high grades." For this issue that is normally poorly struck, this specimen shows a superior impression, with lustrous surfaces that have seen little circulation. There strike is weak on the hair that frames Liberty's face, but well detailed on the hair above the coronet. The star centrils are mostly defined, and stars 3 through 8 could be considered bold. The strike weakness on the reverse is confined to the eagle's left (facing) leg and the lower feathers to the right of the shield. The color is a lovely, light green-gold. There are several clash marks behind Liberty's head from the eagle's right wing as the apparently loose reverse die rotated and clashed at different orientations to the obverse die. This is a superior specimen of this difficult date. Population: 16 in 55, 9 finer (12/05).
From The Carolina Gold Collection.
