1850-C $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. Variety 12-G. Sharply struck from lightly clashed dies with a noticeable triple clash mark in the right obverse field below Liberty's hairline. The overall detail is decent for the date with the exception of some weakness on the eagle's right leg. There are some marks visible in the obverse fields including a small mint-made planchet defect between stars 1 and 2 but this is small enough to not be overly detracting. The reverse is much cleaner and is quite choice. Both sides are lustrous and frosty with a touch of prooflike finish seen in the protected areas of the obverse. The color is a light to medium green-gold with the reverse a bit deeper in hue than the obverse. This is a nice, solid AU coin with much better eye appeal than usual for the date and grade. Encapsulated in an older PCGS holder, the coin appears to be conservatively graded.
Most 1850-C quarter eagles are found in VF and XF. Properly graded AU pieces are scarce and become rare in the higher range of this grade. In Uncirculated, the 1850-C quarter eagle is far scarcer than the PCGS and NGC figures suggest and it is possible that as few as four or five truly Uncirculated pieces exist.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
