1850-80s Daguerreotype & Ambrotype Photos (7)
Featured in this lot are seven Daguerreotype & Ambrotype photographs of various people circa 1850-80s. There are two Ambrotype photos and five Daguerreotype photos. Ambrotypes arose in the mid-1850s as a more economical alternative to daguerreotypes. Like Daguerreotypes, they are a positive image that is typically housed within a protective case. However, where daguerreotypes are printed on a polished silver plate, Ambrotypes are printed on a translucent glass plate. Ambrotypes were the cheaper alternatives to the more expensive Daguerreotypes. The first and largest in this collection shows a woman with tight curled hair, looking directly at the viewer. The second in this collection shows a younger woman with tight curled hair as well, she is looking directly towards the viewer. The third in this collection shows a younger woman as well but with combed straight hair and she looks to the right of the viewer. The fourth shows another young woman with short, straight combed hair, she looks directly towards the viewer. The fifth and final daguerreotype in this collection shows an amazingly detailed photo of a younger woman with a slight smile on her face. She has straight combed hair and looks directly at the viewer. The first Ambrotype shows a younger woman in a stripped dress looking towards the viewer. The second Ambrotype shows a young man with short hair in a comb over style, he looks directly at the viewer. The photos show good condition overall with some wear from their antique age and use over the years but no signs of obvious damage are present. The photos measure from 2 7/8" L x 2 3/8" W to 2" L x 1 3/4" W. The collection weighs 216 grams.
