1850 $5 Mormon Five Dollar XF45 PCGS. K-5, High R.5. The Mormon Church, operating as the "Deseret Assay Office," issued gold coins dated 1849, 1850, and 1860. While denominations included $2.50, $5, $10, and $20, it is the five dollar pieces that are most familiar and most often seen today. Perhaps just over 100 of these coins exist today, along with 35 to 40 of the $2.50 pieces, possible 10 $10 pieces, and 20 $20 pieces. Among the five dollar coins that survive, about 50 pieces are dated 1849, with approximately 35 each of the 1850 and 1860-dated pieces. From the Pittman collection, and described by David Akers as: "Attractive medium coppery gold color; a trace of luster remains. Light hairlines and abrasions as well as numerous digs on the obverse below the mitre and on the reverse above the clasped hands."
Ex: A.H.
