1850 $5 Mormon Five Dollar Fine 15 NGC.
1850 $5 Mormon Five Dollar Fine 15 NGC. K-5, High R.5. Although NGC states that this piece is dated 1849, the three-pointed cap above the eye differs only on the 1850 Five Dollar piece. After the Gold Rush in California began in earnest in 1848, at the end of that year enough gold dust had found its way into the Mormon's church treasury to begin private gold coinage. On November 25th of that year, Brigham Young, John Kay, and John Taylor got together and created the symbols used on these unique and interesting territorial coins. Apparently official production records were not kept (or have subsequently been lost) and today we do not know the exact number of pieces struck. Most pieces were melted in the 1850s because they were underweight and unrespected in commerce. The reverse center and lower right border is typically struck, while the obverse is bold. An affordable olive-gold example of this desirable and historical Territorial issue. Listed on page 301 of the 2003 Guide Book. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
