1850<$5> Moffat & Co. Five Dollar XF40 PCGS. K-7, R.4. This variety is distinguished by the end of the branch over the D, and thin arrows that do not touch. The firm of Moffat & Co. had a curious status as both quasi-official U.S. Assay Office from 1850 to 1853, and issuer of small denomination coins that were not technically legal when issued. Nevertheless, Moffat coins were of full value (if not more) and the firm was awarded a government coining contract as soon as Congress authorized the establishment of the assay office in San Francisco. This piece shows considerable wear over the highpoints, and probably some softness of strike as well. Deep reddish patina surrounds the devices on each side, and to the casual observer there are no obvious or mentionable abrasions.
