1850<$5> Moffat & Co. Five Dollar VF Details, Damaged, NCS. K-7a, R.4. The present piece does not match the Kagin plate for 7 or 7a. However, the reverse die is referred to in the text for K-7a, which mentions a heavy die break beneath the OL in DOL. The "damaged" designation is a bit harsh, although the olive and tan surfaces are slightly granular, and a small mark is on the lower cheek. Following the gold rush, Moffat & Co. was the most widely respected private coiner in California. In 1851, the firm won the contract for the U.S. Assay Office of Gold, which evolved into the federal branch mint at San Francisco.
