1850 $5 Moffat & Co. Five Dollar MS62 NGC. K-7, R.
1850 $5 Moffat & Co. Five Dollar MS62 NGC. K-7, R.4. This is the variety with a Small Eagle on the reverse, and with thin arrowheads that do not touch each other. Two different reverse dies were identified by Don Kagin, and the other with a Large Eagle is about equal in rarity. The initial issue of the Moffat firm consisted of rectangular ingots of various sizes and values, with those of a $16.00 value being the most plentiful. Afterward, the firm issues 1849-dated $5 and $10 gold coins and 1850 $5 pieces. The $5 coins are rather plentiful while the $10 issues are much scarcer. This is a lovely Mint State example with brilliant greenish-gold luster and excellent surfaces. Extensive die rust is visible, as made, and mostly located on the obverse. Listed on page 295 of the 2005 Guide Book. Lot:9771
