1850 $20 MS62 PCGS. A remarkable example of the first
1850<$20> MS62 PCGS. A remarkable example of the first double eagle issue of the United States Mint. Although this issue is not particularly rare when all grades are considered, it is elusive in Mint States grades. From a mintage of 1.1 million coins, Q. David Bowers estimated a total surviving population of 3,000 to 5,000 circulated coins, but only 30 to 50 Mint State coins. In A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, Bowers recorded a "field population" for each date, giving separate figures for circulated and Mint States categories. This was his estimate of the total surviving number of coins currently in the hands of collectors, investors, and other parties. As he noted in his book: "no account is made for undiscovered hoards, if any exist."
This is an impressive Mint State example housed in a first generation PCGS holder. The surfaces are fully brilliant with highly lustrous yellow-gold color. It is nicely centered with all details brought up to their fullest advantage. The obverse, especially, has a nice cameo appearance with frosty devices and satiny, almost prooflike fields. A remarkable example with few finer quality pieces known. Population: 22 in 62, 8 finer (6/06).
