1850 $20 AU58 NGC. With the introduction of the new do
1850<$20> AU58 NGC. With the introduction of the new double eagle denomination, this was an important year in American numismatics. Nearly all gold used in coinage now came from the California gold fields. The United States Mint, including all branches, coined a little under 4 million dollars in gold coins in 1848, about 9 million dollars in 1849, and nearly 32 million dollars in 1850. About two-thirds of the 1850 total was in the form of double eagles struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Even more fascinating is an examination of the total production in terms of use, and a comparison to the value of gold today, in 2006. At the current price of $588 per ounce as these words are written, the production of gold coins by the United States Mint in 1850 alone was equivalent to $900 million, up from just $100 million two years earlier.
This is a remarkable example with excellent eye appeal created by light green-gold color and reflective surfaces. Traces of orange toning on the high points, representing traces of wear, add to the overall appearance. The surfaces are lightly abraded, but without taking anything away from the aesthetics of this example. Several references will be important to the study of these double eagles from The Wyoming Collection. Most important among them are A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins, by Q. David Bowers and published in 2004 by Whitman Publishing, LLC; and An Insider's Guide to Collection Type I Double Eagles by Douglas Winter and Adam Crum, and published in 2002 by Newport Communications. These will be referenced as Bowers or Winter and Crum in the listings to follow.
From The Wyoming Collection.
