1850 $2 1/2 MS65 PCGS. After the California Gold Rush
1850 $2 1/2 MS65 PCGS. After the California Gold Rush began in 1848, the amounts of gold making their way to the Philadelphia Mint increased dramatically. While that institution produced more than 23,000 quarter eagles in 1849, in 1850 it increased the amount more than tenfold. Despite the high mintage for the era of more than a quarter of a million pieces, the 1850 issue is quite elusive in the higher reaches of Mint State. While NGC and PCGS combined have certified more than 138 grading events (not coins) from MS60 through MS64, only this single piece has been graded MS65, that at PCGS, although NGC has graded two pieces finer, both MS66 Star examples.
The surfaces are pretty yellow-gold and distraction-free, although light die rust shows on the obverse under a lens, creating a pebbly appearance. The strike is well executed except for light softness on the Y of LIBERTY and the lower beads of the hair cord nearby. A nice and attractive example of this historic early gold coinage.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
