1850 $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. With a sizeable (for the era) original mintage of 252,923 pieces, the 1850 is among the more common Liberty Quarter Eagles from the 1840s and 1850s, at least in circulated grades. The general availability of worn survivors has led most collectors to underestimate the scarcity of Mint State survivors. Writing in 1986, Paul F. Taglione states that "the 1850 is quite rare in grades discernibly superior to Mint State-63," a statement that still holds true today. In fact, NGC and PCGS combined report only 19 coins at or above the MS63 level of preservation (7/02). The present example displays an above average strike for the type with just a little bit of softness over the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers. The fields glow with modest brightness at certain angles, and rich orange-gold color is seen throughout. With no singularly bothersome abrasions, this coin possesses the eye appeal of an even higher grade. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
