1849 Taylor & Fillmore Jugate Inaugural Invite Important 1849 Taylor & Fillmore Jugate Invitation Fo
Important 1849 Taylor & Fillmore Jugate Invitation For an Unofficial Inaugural Ball in Concord, New Hampshire. During the 1840s and 1850s, it was a popular practice to have unofficial Inaugural Balls, since it was not practical for many local luminaries to travel to Washington for official functions. Collectors of official inaugural items also avidly seek invitations and other ephemera from such events, although these items do not command quite the same price levels in the market.

This is perhaps the most exciting example we have encountered of this unofficial genre, however, because of the presence of an all-but-unknown Taylor & Fillmore jugate at the top. Except for the familiar Currier prints, and a single copy of an embossed letterhead, we know of no other period items featuring a jugate of these two! This is a particularly lovely item, printed in gold-colored ink against light blue paper. The presence of the Taylor & Fillmore jugate images should give it an appeal far beyond what it commands as an 1849 inaugural collectible.

Condition is beautiful, with two fine horizontal creases as it was originally (hand) delivered. It is addressed to a "Mr. Andrew Jackson." Clearly, it was not sent to Old Hickory, who had passed on four years earlier, but we find it ironic to see the name of that rock-ribbed Democrat on a Whig invitation! A very special item. 5.25" x 8.25".
