1849<P3CS> Three Cent Silver, Judd-112 Restrike, Pollock-126, Low R.7, PR64 PCGS. Ex: HW Bass Jr. The standard 1849 Seated Half Dime obverse, but paired with a somewhat crude and plain reverse die that bears the large Roman numeral III and has unusual slanted dentils. Struck with a reeded edge in an alloy of 60% silver, 40% copper. The regular issue 1851 Three Cent Silver, in comparison, has a smaller diameter and a less base alloy of 75% silver, 25% copper. The date is repunched, most apparent on the 1 and 9, the reverse is double struck with a rotation of 5 to 10 degrees between the two strikes. The second strike is rotated relative to the obverse. A crisp and unblemished example with original lilac and olive colors.
Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part I (Bowers and Merena, 5/99), lot 1026, which realized $2,530; earlier purchased by Bass from Lee Hewitt on April 17, 1972.
From The Western Hills Collection.
