1849-O<50C> AU58 NGC. Under close examination, there are no unusual die characteristics on this example. The date appears to slant down ever so slightly to the right. The reverse has a medium sized O mintmark close to the junction of the stem and tip of the lowest arrow feather, and the mintmark appears to lean very slightly to the left. The reverse die is rotated clockwise about 45 degrees. Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert do not mention any individual varieties in their Complete Guide to the series. While the characteristics of this example do not constitute a special die variety, they may be important to the researcher who is trying to track all individual die characteristics. In their reference, Wiley and Bugert indicate that 15 individual die marriages have been documented. Walter Breen records two varieties in his Complete Encyclopedia, a doubled date and a normal date.
Although the mintage of this issue was well over 2 million coins, it is still quite rare in Mint State grades, with only 61 such pieces certified by PCGS and NGC combined. Even this AU58 example is important to the specialist or the avid collector. Probably once cleaned, the central obverse and reverse are mostly light silver in color with pale gold and peripheral toning on both sides. A few faint scratches and abrasions are visible, but these are by know means significant. This is a pleasing example with only a trace of wear on the highest design points. Population: 18 in 58, 19 finer (8/05).
