1849 N-26 R3 AU58.
1849 N-26 R3 AU58. An attractive cent that is free of any trace of wear, but it was softly struck on the coronet over LIB, as usual, and the obverse is covered with tiny struck-through lint marks, all as struck. There are a few light contact marks mixed in with the lint marks, including a dull nick in the field right of the inner curl, a thin diagonal nick on the cheek, and two small rim nicks at star 1. The reverse is nicely struck and free of defects other than a light nick under the N in CENT. Lustrous bluish steel brown with traces of underlying very faded mint red on both sides. MDS, die state b. The die lines at the dentils between star 3 & 4 are gone. A very nice example of a variety that’s seldom found in mint state grades. CC#3 in the Grellman census. Ex Doug Bird-R. S. Brown, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 6/98:634-Chris McCawley 3/04. DWH #2409.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
