1849 G$1 Small Head, No L MS65 NGC. On May 8, 1849 the Philadelphia Mint delivered 1,000 examples of this, the premier U.S. Gold Dollar. The design was modified soon thereafter to add the designer's initial L to the obverse. Despite a limited original mintage, the 1849 No L is not a rare coin. Rather, it is generally obtainable with patience in Mint State because many examples were undoubtedly set aside as the first representatives of the new denomination. This conditionally scarce Gem is smoother and more lustrous than most survivors with rich reddish-gold color. There are no outwardly distracting blemishes, and the devices are powerfully impressed throughout. Myriad spindly die cracks (as struck) are seen near the left reverse border, and there are a few tiny, well concealed alloy spots in the same area. An attractive representative of an issue that no type collection can do without. Population: 17 in 65, 13 finer (7/02).
