1849 G$1 No L MS68 NGC. The official mintage of the No L gold dollar is 1,000 pieces, all of which were struck on May 8, 1849. Over the years we have seen quite a number of these pieces, enough to make us wonder if the official mintage is correct. On the other hand, it would stand to reason that a large percentage of the production would be set aside by officials as well as the general public as novelties and mementoes. This preservation in high grade was recognized by Paul Taglione in 1982, when he wrote: "A good number of the 1000 were saved and clearly circulated examples (Extremely Fine and lower) are rarely encountered and little cared about." Also noted by Taglione 25 years ago, this variant was not listed in the Guide Book. That oversight has now been corrected.
While a large percentage of the original mintage appears to have been saved, few coins can rival the preservation of surfaces seen on this piece. In fact, only two other pieces have been certified at this lofty level, all three are NGC encapsulated. As expected, this exquisite coin is nearly flawless with no abrasions or breaks in the luster apparent. Both sides exhibit rich, even copper-gold color and the mint luster is thick and frosted. Fully struck in all areas. A couple of vertical die breaks are present on the upper part of the reverse, indicating this was not one of the first coins produced, and it also is indicative of the excessive pressure used to strike these pieces--undoubtedly from the Mint's unfamiliarity with the production of this small format gold coin.

Coin Engraver: James B.
