1849<G$1> No L MS64 PCGS. This is the first gold dollar variety, designated as Type One by Breen, with a small head, no designer's initial, and an open wreath on the reverse. The Small Head design gave way to the Large Head design which remained in production through 1854. Those without the small L are considered the first pieces issued, and the Open Wreath is also considered an earlier design, with the Closed Wreath continuing to 1854. The combination of these various factors leads to the designation that this is the first variety struck. This example is sharply struck with rich lemon-yellow color and frosty luster. Faint splashes of orange toning appear on the reverse.
