<table><tr><td><table><tr><td>1849-D G$1 MS64 PCGS. Variety 1-B. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Struck from a fairly late reverse die with a number of die cracks visible, including one through the top of the mintmark and another through the N in UNITED. An estimated 250-300 examples are known with most in the XF40 to AU53 range. There are as many as 30-40 known in Uncirculated with most grading MS60 to MS62. There are two or three Gems plus another three to five that grade MS64 by today's standards. The strike on this piece is outstanding with completely defined hair and star detail on the obverse; the reverse is better centered than usual with a very bold date and mintmark. This coin is about as well struck an example of a gold dollar from Dahlonega as one is likely to find and it actually compares favorably to a Philadelphia issue of this era. There are a few light marks on the obverse including a very faint scuff in front of the profile and a few scattered slide marks. The reverse is very clean with some minor handling marks seen with magnification. There are no patches of die rust or other mint-made disturbances, as often seen on 1849-D gold dollars. Both sides show rich, velvety mint luster with the obverse a bit more frosty than the reverse. The fields are bright and have a confirmed semi-prooflikeness on each side. The luster is well above average and has not been disturbed by any past dipping or any other "enhancement." Rich yellow-gold and orange shades, in similar configurations, can be seen on both sides. This color is very appealing and strongly suggests the originality of this coin. The overall level of eye appeal is well above average for the date and grade. Unlike many 1849-D gold dollars this piece is well struck and has good "balance" between the obverse and the reverse. The surfaces are quite choice and the color is pleasing.Ex: Long Beach Sale (Heritage, 2/99), lot 6088 (as NGC MS64); Michigan Collection (Superior, 1/95), lot 1255, where it brought $13,475; Orlando Sale (Superior, 8/92), lot 527, where it realized $13,200. This piece is also the plate coin in the second edition of Doug Winter's book on Dahlonega gold and it is listed in the updated Condition Census as tied for fourth finest known. <BR><BR><B>Important notice:</B> Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. American Arbitration Association (A.A.A.). The A.A.A. arbitration shall be
conducted under the provisions of the Federal Arbitration Act with locale
in Dallas, Texas. The prevailing party may be awarded his reasonable
attorney's fees and costs. An arbitrator's award is enforceable in any
court of competent jurisdiction. Any claim made by a bidder has to be
presented within one (1) year or it is barred. Any claim as to provenance
or authenticity must first be transmitted to Auctioneer by credible and
definitive evidence and there is no assurance such presentment that
Auctioneer will validate the claim. Authentication is not an exact science
and other contrary opinions may not be recognized by Auctioneer. Auctioneer
in no event shall be responsible for consequential and incidental damages
and the value of an item is determined by its high bid, which is
Auctioneer's maximum liability. Provenance is not guaranteed by the
Auctioneer, but rather provenance is guaranteed by the consignor. Any
action or claim shall include the consignor with auctioneer acting as
interpleador or nominal party. While every effort is made to determine
provenance and authenticity it is up to the Bidder to arrive at that
conclusion prior to bidding.<o:p></o:p></span></li>

default in payment thereof shall be arbitrated pursuant to the arbitration
provision. In the event that any matter including actions to compel
