1849-D G$1 MS63 NGC. Winter 1-A. This coin was previously offered as lot 7536 in our May 2000 Central States Signature Sale, where it was cataloged as: "Although several examples were saved as mementos from the Dahlonega Mint's first Gold Dollar delivery, the 1849-D is a conditionally rare issue that is typically encountered in XF or AU grade. Many of the known Mint State survivors grade either MS61 or MS62 and this Select BU example is one of the four finest pieces that we have handled recently. We offered an MS62 PCGS example in our 1999 FUN Sale as part of the North Georgia Collection, an exceptional MS64 NGC piece in our February 1999 Long Beach Sale as part of the William Miller Collection, and an MS63 PCGS specimen in our 1999 Chicago ANA Sale as part of the Chestatee Collection. Since Doug Winter featured the Condition Census Chestatee (he erroneously labels it as the North Georgia example) as the plate coin in his book on D-mint gold coins, we can only assume that this similarly graded example is also comfortably within the Condition Census. "Both sides show a bright, moderately prooflike appearance with vivid yellow-gold features. The strike is well above average for a D-mint Gold Dollar and there is no noticeable lack of definition. A few scattered abrasions account for the grade, and a pair of small indentations about the right foot of the 1 in the denomination should help establish this coin's pedigree. An important coin for the advanced gold collector and [an overall] pleasing specimen." The coin realized $7,015 in that sale. From the Ashland City Collection.
