1849-D G$1 AU58 NGC. Winter 1-B. The Dahlonega Mint inaugurated Gold Dollar production in 1849 with a delivery of 21,588 pieces. This is a limited total, to be sure, but the 1849-D is the most readily obtainable D-mint Gold Dollar in both circulated and Mint State grades. Nonetheless, the '49-D is not common in an absolute sense, and Winter (1997) estimates that just 225-250 coins are extant in all grades. The obverse is typically sharp for the date with the only mentionable softness of detail confined to the hair curls below LIBERTY. As befits this die marriage, the reverse is also boldly defined. Both sides are richly toned in vivid copper-gold hues that highlight the uncommonly distraction-free features. Remnants of original mint luster are seen in the more protected areas toward the rims. Winter-1B is the scarcer of the two known die marriages of this first-year issue. Although the majority of the original mintage was produced from these dies (Winter states a total of 14,955 pieces), it seems likely that fewer examples were saved than those of the Winter 1-A variety. From the William C.
