1849-D $5 MS62 NGC. Winter 17-K. The mintmark touches the stem, but not the feather. This variety reuses the reverse employed on the 1848-D/D, but there is no trace of doubling on the mintmark. In addition, there is a prominent die crack that begins at the rim over the I in AMERICA, goes through that letter, through the upper two arrows, and ends at the eagle's right leg. As an issue, the '49-D is a moderately scarce Dahlonega Half Eagle. However, Mint State pieces such as this are very elusive with only 3-4 coins believed extant today. This is a mid-Condition Census example that is sharply struck throughout. The surfaces are bright and lustrous with pleasing yellow-gold color overall. Each side has a number of small abrasions scattered about, but the only one of any significance is a shallow scrape that runs parallel to the underside of the eagle's right (facing) wing. From the Ashland City Collection.
